About the Author:
Dan Lutts, the author of Charm Wars, was brought up in Quincy, Massachusetts, and began addictively reading Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman comic books at an early age, much to his mother's distress. In junior high school, he switched to reading science fiction novels. While in high school and college, he wrote science fiction short stories.

Dan taught history and archaeology in high school for ten years. After being laid off because of budget cuts, he used his love of writing to retrain and became a software technical editor and writer. He worked for several computer companies, taught technical writing at the college level, and worked as a freelance writer.

Dan loves to read and has varied tastes, including Young Adult, historical fiction, mysteries, 18th-century sea epics, and history. He especially enjoys Young Adult fiction and decided to try his hand at it. Charm Wars, Dan’s first novel, is the result.

Dan lives in rural Maine with his wife, Lisa. When he’s not working or writing, Dan can be found reading, making and shooting medieval arrows with his longbow, or playing with his dog and two cats—all rescue animals.

Excerpt
As Rill’s condition got worse and worse each day, a dark cloud of depression hovered
over Alyse. Even though she knew applying healing hands wasn’t working, she used that magic
on Rill anyway, each time praying to the One Goddess and begging that She intervene. But if the
One Goddess had heard, She was refusing Alyse’s fervent requests. Jenna and Dorn expressed
their concern every time Alyse came out of his bedroom. Sometimes after she answered, Alyse
caught them exchanging that same silent message.
This morning, despair settled heavily in her chest as she left Rill’s bedroom. After closing
the door, she leaned against it, buried her face in her hands, and sobbed. Dorn had just come in
from the field to fetch something, Jenna was spinning wool, and Serin was carding wool to
separate the fibers so Jenna could spin them. Jenna motioned for Serin to leave, then crossed the
rough-hewn floorboards with Dorn to where Alyse was weeping.
Jenna put an arm around Alyse’s shoulder. “He’s gettin’ worse?”
Alyse looked at their blurry faces, and her throat thickened. “He’s dying, and there’s
nothing I can do except watch him die.” She drew in a huge, ragged lungful of air. “It’s only a
matter of days before . . .” She slumped against Jenna. “If only Priestess Sybil were here. Or
Kendra. They’d know what to do. But me . . . I don’t. All I can do is watch him die.”
Sobs racked her body.
Gently, Jenna wiped tears from Alyse’s cheek. “He means a great deal to you, don’t he?”
“We’ve been through a lot together.”
“Do ya love him?”
Alyse pulled back, and her tear-drenched eyes popped open in surprise. “Love him? No.
But there’s a . . . a connection between us. Between me, him, and his family. I think maybe the
Five Sisters wove all of our tapestries together for some reason. But whatever that reason is, the

Sisters don’t care about it anymore.”
Dorn frowned at his wife. “I think it’s time.”
Jenna nodded.
Alyse sniffed and wiped snot from her nose. “Time for what?”
Dorn motioned to Jenna. “You tell her.”
Maybe it’s time we visited Twalla,” Jenna said.
“Who’s that?” Alyse asked.
Jenna hesitated, then glanced at Dorn who motioned for her to continue. “A strenga.”
Alyse’s stomach lurched violently in horror as she stepped back and bumped against the
latch on the bedroom door but was oblivious to the metal digging into her spine. “A strenga!”
