Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Unless you have spent the best part of the past year living under a rock, you will be well aware that a new Harry Potter play, and subsequently the script, was in the making. Yesterday, the play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, had its official opening which, of course, left the book to be released today, July 31st, also known as both Harry Potter's and his 'mother', JK Rowling's, birthday.

First of all, I want to wish a very happy birthday to the pair!

You might know that I'm a huge Potter fan and I have been so excited about this book for so long now! The eighth Potter book has finally arrived! Just to give you an idea of how much of a fan I am: I've read the books so many times I've actually lost count; I've watched the films so much I can talk along to them; last night I watched Deathly Hallows Part 2 in preparation and I didn't even get 2 minutes in before crying.

So yes, h.u.g.e. Potterhead here so it's unsurprising just how emotional I was today.

I actually had a ticket for the midnight release of the book at my 'local' (over 25 miles away) Waterstones in Plymouth. However, due to the distance, I couldn't attend. I could get a bus there, but no matter how much begging, my parent's refused to pick me up. Yep, they're actually worse than the Dursleys.

Did I let that spoil the fun? Hell no!

I got the first bus in this morning (which did mean getting up at 8am... on a Sunday...) and was outside Waterstones ready for the doors to open to receive my copy! Once I had my book, I went to the other Waterstones in the city to take part in the celebrations.

I bought the quidditch set, had some of Harry's birthday cake, made a bookmark, took loads of photos and took part in the fantastic scavenger hunt they had set up. It was so much fun, especially seeing everyone all dressed up in their finest wizarding gear and immaculate uniform!

I've only read about a third of the book so far, but I am thoroughly enjoying it. I've only read a couple play scripts before, so it took a while to get used to. I also miss having the inner thoughts of the characters and the setting descriptions, but besides that, Cursed Child is certainly living up to it's hype!

Do you have the book? Have you read it yet? What are your thoughts?

About the Author:

Writing has always been a hobby of mine, beginning as a young child. It was a way to cope with losing my father at seven years of age. I started with poetry and was featured several times on the amazing poetry blog, Autumn Leaves, by Sondra Ball. My love for poetry soon led to writing songs in middle school and beyond, which I still do occasionally. Music has always been an important part of my existence, so writing songs came naturally to me. In high school, I started my own novel, however, life got in the way and I never finished it.

Fast forward many years later and I find myself married with three children, absorbed in my busy life with commitments to my family, work, school, church, and charities, among other things. One day I came across my old binder, with notes from my first novel, and it was with those notes that I conjured up the elusive Everealm.

I write to please readers such as myself, who have a love for fantasy and romance, but like a little danger and sex in their reading. I wrote the book with a mature audience in mind, who can appreciate a hearty imaginary world with magic and the unknown, but want more than fluffy love stories with wizards in them. They want the romance, magic, and danger, all wrapped into one.

Songs of Everealm Series is the second series set in the fantasy-filled Everealm. It begins 8 years after the conclusion of the first series, the Everealm Series, but can be read separately.

History of my copy: I received a free copy of Songs of Sovereign through YA Bound Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. Check out my stop on the blog tour on July 29th.

The Songs of Everealm series takes place 8 years after the final book of Wright’s other series, the Everealm series. However, this series can be read separately. I haven’t read the previous series and haven’t felt like I am missing anything.

Plot: Songs of Sovereign follows Princess Sarita on a quest to obtain a stone that shall give her full magic. Whilst she initially sets off on her quest with only Gabby, soon there is a whole bunch of them traversing the land together, leading to some very amusing moments!
Intertwining with this main plot, there are numerous romantic sub-stories that make up Songs of Sovereign. First, there is King Cassidy and his endless pursual of Sarita. Then there is Gabby who is engaged with Garrison but clearly still in love with Oliver, who is courting Calista. Then Asher discovers that his destined mate is actually the fairy Emery. That may seem like a lot of romance for just one book, but Wright has always made it clear that her books contain as much romance as they do magic.
Whilst I’m not a huge romance fan, I thoroughly enjoyed Songs of Sovereign. The plot felt fresh, full of twists and was certainly interesting enough and often the romance just added comedy to the plot, rather than completely overtaking the story.

Setting: Wright has created a wonderful world in Everealm, a land I could lose myself in forever. Whilst I feel as if Songs of Sovereign would benefit from a little more description, especially as she has created such a detailed realm, it is certainly sufficient.

Characters: Another good thing about this book is the range of characters. This has actually led me to not having any specific favourites, although I do want to shout out Oliver as I love him! My perhaps on criticism is the development of Calista. Whilst it is nice to see her get along with Emery, I think it would have made things a little more interesting if she actually remained hating magic – it certainly would have added a different layer to the groups’ interactions.

To read or not to read: Read. Overall, Songs of Sovereign is all that it claimed to be. A romance filled magical quest that is well-written enough to keep you hooked in and wanting more. I can’t wait to start reading its sequel, Songs of Sparrows!

Extract:
The Exlathars rise and their black pointed teeth gleam as they lunge at the intruders. In the air, terraduchins collide with thrashing wings and hang in crooked talons. The Court throw spears of lead that slice though the creatures’ acid flesh, fearsome shrieks drowning out all other sounds of battle.
From every direction, Coltis folk charge at the beasts, their spears raised and potions ready. There is a flash of purple as one of the serums is tossed, smashing to the ground, inches from an Exlathar’s pointed ankle. It chuckles—a raspy, cold sound—then glides murderously toward the one who threw it. With an almighty shriek, a sulphurous mist spews from its mouth and falls onto the Coltis.
He gawks, clutching his throat, gasping for air before his eyes bulge from his head and blood trickles from his nose.
‘What’s happening to Henriqué?’ bellows Vladimir as he watches the man violently convulse. ‘Iginassa,’ he calls out, setting a rock ablaze and hurtling it at the Exlathar with a thrust of his head. The beast squawks angrily and soars off to attack another as the flames of the rock are extinguished in the mud. Vladimir races to where Henriqué has fallen.
Kneeling, Vladimir turns his friend to face him, jumping back in horror. Blood leaks from the fallen man’s nose and the corners of his eyes, his face barely recognisable. Drained of all moisture, his skin is now shrivelled and sunken.
‘Henriqué?’ Vladimir gasps, futilely, knowing his friend will not answer, his friend is no longer here. Snapped out of his shock by the howls of those around him, Vladimir is stricken to see the same thing happening to others. Though the Coltis continue to fight with vigour, the toxic yellow mist spraying from the open mouths of the beasts is all it takes to end them.
‘RUN,’ Vladimir yells. ‘Everyone back to Melaxous,’ and he rushes over to another fallen member of the Court, but he’s too late. He darts from victim to victim, but even Spee’ad as he is, Vladimir is not fast enough to save them. ‘No!’ he gasps as he sees an Exlathar creep up behind Lexovia as she battles with another.

‘BEHIND YOU,’ he roars…

Book Description:

Two worlds...one glass wall...no turning back.

The human race has been divided. The chosen few live in the safety of the domes, watching through their glass walls as those left on the outside suffer and die. Seventeen-year-old Nola Kent has spent her life in the domes, being trained to protect her little piece of the world that has been chosen to survive. The mission of the domes is to preserve the human race, not to help the sick and starving. Book Review: The Neverland Wars by Audrey Greathouse

The Neverland Wars – Audrey Greathouse

*Warning – may contain spoilers*

Author: Audrey Greathouse
Publisher: Clean Teen Publishing
First published: 2016
Edition: eBook (The cover is stunning!)
Pages: 244
Blurb:    (Taken from goodreads)
Magic can do a lot—give you flight, show you mermaids, help you taste the stars, and… solve the budget crisis? That's what the grown-ups will do with it if they ever make it to Neverland to steal its magic and bring their children home.

However, Gwen doesn't know this. She's just a sixteen-year-old girl with a place on the debate team and a powerful crush on Jay, the soon-to-be homecoming king. She doesn't know her little sister could actually run away with Peter Pan, or that she might have to chase after her to bring her home safe. Gwen will find out though—and when she does, she'll discover she's in the middle of a looming war between Neverland and reality.

She'll be out of place as a teenager in Neverland, but she won't be the only one. Peter Pan's constant treks back to the mainland have slowly aged him into adolescence as well. Soon, Gwen will have to decide whether she's going to join impish, playful Peter in his fight for eternal youth… or if she's going to scramble back to reality in time for the homecoming dance.

History of my copy: I received a copy of The Neverland Wars though YA Bound Book Tours in exchange for an honest review.

Let it be said now that I’m not too familiar to the tale of Peter Pan. I haven’t even seen the Disney movie (or if I have I can’t remember). My familiarity with the story has literally come from a panto I saw back in 2008 (which starred Emu) and its inclusion in Once Upon A Time. So yep, a pretty much a Neverland newbie over here. That being said, I don’t think that took anything away from the story.

Plot: The Neverland Wars follows Gwen, a typical teenage girl who is caught up in school and crushes and is stuck at that annoying point in life where you’re too old to be a kid and too young to be an adult.
When her younger sister Rosemary goes missing, she is brought into the secret that Neverland exists, Peter Pan really does take children, and that magic is what makes the adult world go round.
Joining her sister in Neverland, Gwen is catapulted into a world very different from her reality and is seemingly paradise, until the bombings happen, a shocking reminder that reality and Neverland are at war.
The Neverland Wars ends with Gwen returning home and attending a party, which magic soon invades. In a spur of the moment decision, she finally decides to stick with Peter and see whether she can remain a child forever.

Setting: One thing that really impressed me about The Neverland Wars is Greathouse’s writing style. She captivates the child innocence of each and every character wonderfully, but also recognises that children can be wise beyond their years. On top of this, she has an excellent way of describing the settings – I honestly felt like I was in the paradise of Neverland myself! Although not a new world, she has so wonderfully crafted her own version of Peter’s homeland.

Characters: I really loved Peter in The Neverland Wars. The idea that he has aged a little each time he returned to reality created an interesting point in this retelling, as Peter was now a lot older than the lost kids (rather than boys). Because of this, I couldn’t help but feel that Peter and Gwen should have ended up becoming a little closer, even if just because they were closer in age than they were to anyone else.
Gwen herself was quite an interesting character too. She was typical in every shape and form, but without trying hard to be so. It was refreshing to actually read an entirely relatable character, and one that portrayed the difficulty of growing up so well.

To read or not to read: Read. I’m not sure if Greathouse is intending to write a sequel, but The Neverland Wars certainly feels part of a series. There are some monumental future-seeing events that hint at future books, and then there is the blatant fact that this book had so little fighting compared to its title. Despite this, I would recommend the story to anyone, especially those who love fairytales. It is fantastic at dealing with adolescence problems and the inevitable process of growing up, so is a great read for any tween not sure where they belong in the world.

Book Review: Touched by the Moon by Lisa M. Airey

Touched by the Moon – Lisa M. Airey

*Warning – may contain spoilers*

Author: Lisa M. Airey
Publisher: Aakenbaaken & Kent
First published: 2015
Edition: Signed paperback. I also love the cover!
Pages: 309
Blurb:
TAKEN
The timber wolves of Fallston, South Dakota fall       prey to an international ring of fur trappers. Unfortunately, timber wolves are not all they capture. Taken by a savage group of criminals and transported half a world away to Denmark, two young boys must set aside their sibling rivalry to survive the violence that surrounds them.
HAUNTED
Julie Walker is haunted by the loss of her sons and haunted by the reappearance of the one man she never wanted to see again in her lifetime, Hayden Kolding. He has an agenda, and a surprising ally, forcing Julie to confront a side of herself that she has fought long and hard to deny.
HUNTER
But life is seldom simply a matter of black and white. As victim becomes victor and hunter becomes hunted, there is a world of gray. And Gray Walker is out for blood.

History of my copy: I received a signed copy of Touched by the Moon from the author in exchange for an honest review. She also sent a handwritten thankyou card with it, which was a really nice touch.

Werewolves and a pretty cover always make me beeline to a book. Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed!

At first I was finding Touched by the Moon a little difficult to get into, feeling as if I should already know the characters. Then I found out that it is actually the second book in the Touching the Moon series, oops! That being said, once you were a few chapters in and got used to everyone, it actually works well as a standalone too. I will, however, get around to reading the first in the series eventually.

Plot: Touched by the Moon primarily focuses on the kidnapping of Gray and Julie’s twin boys, Kit and Bear. In a journey that takes both the boys and the reader halfway across the world, we discover just how dangerous the world can be, and that monsters may come in the form of rogue wolves, but not all wolves are monsters.
Juxtaposing this, we have Julie stuck back home in South Dakota as she comes to terms with her family life and the prospect of another set of twins. We also see her battle her inner demons as Hayden, a man who once kidnapped her, comes back into her life. On top of this, we have some of Julie’s closest friends discover what she is.
To add yet another dimension to the story, we have the battle of Peter with his memories and beliefs who, with the help of his friends Jens and his family rescue two wolf pups, who just so happen to be the missing boys.
It’s a story of adventure, survival, family and a whole lot of determination all woven together in a fantastic story.

Setting: Touched by the Moon spans the USA, Canada and Denmark, which is a broad range of areas and a daunting task, but one Airey pulls off brilliantly. Without having been to any of the places, I feel as if they have been portrayed beautifully and it is clear that a large amount of research has gone into the traditions and folklore of the locations.

Characters: No character in Touched by the Moon is badly written. Yes, there is pure evil, especially in Rutger, but each and every character felt unique and had their own personality.
My least favourite is probably Julie, but I think reading the previous book may change my mind on that as I don’t quite understand what she is and how she has become the woman she is.
On the other hand, Peter is one of my favourite characters, and Bear and Kit are so adorable, especially as wolf pups! They are brave and daring yet so clearly vulnerable and yearn for home. I think Airey has captured the naivety and nature of young boys wonderfully, and added their lupine twist in a way that seems believable and not overpowering.

To read or not to read: Read. I thoroughly enjoyed Touched by the Moon and would recommend it to many, especially those who love werewolves but want something other than the traditional soppy YA books featuring them. Whilst I think the novel does work well as a stand-alone book, I imagine it is better to read its predecessor first.

Excerpt:

Elliott Rand had been close to the end of his search grid when he was called back in to home base. The reckless boys had been found and now it was time for a couple of fingers of Gentleman Jack and some good home cookin’. Julie’s cooking. He was ready. More than ready.
He heard a wolf off in the distance. But it wasn’t a howl. It was a cry of pain. Abject pain.
Elliott shifted direction and cursed his fate. He was betting dollars to doughnuts that a timber wolf had been caught in an illegal wolf trap. It would be next to impossible to save a feral wounded without a tranquilizer gun. The best he could do was put the beast out of its misery. He clenched his jaws.
He moved as quickly as he was able, but the air was biting cold. It hurt to breathe. His eyes scanned the landscape for a safe path to follow and he moved forward with caution. The snowfall had been heavy, but it was powder dry and had slid down the mountain slope leaving a thinner blanket on the steeper portions. It was there he found the gray timber wolf gnawing at a left hind leg that was viciously pinned between two jaws of steel.
“God,” murmured Elliott.
He took a step forward and felt his left leg buckle beneath him. The ice cut into his face as he took a nose dive into the snow. When he could take a breath and move past the searing, blinding pain, he looked back. His left leg was trapped within a shark’s maw of metal.
He pushed himself upright and tried to survey the damage, but all he could do was whimper like a child. The shame of his weakness galvanized him with attitude. He bit his glove and tried to corral his focus.
Breathe. Breathe.
With trembling hands he tried to pry the trap loose, but his arms were like rubber. He looked up at the wolf. It was thirty feet away, its lip curled up in a menacing snarl. Elliott tried to pry the trap loose again. And failed.
It was getting darker, he noticed. Odd that. It was mid-afternoon. He scrabbled at the metal vice pinning his leg.
Broken, the leg was definitely broken.
He looked back to the wolf. The animal was trying to chew through its own leg to get free. The white snow surrounding him was screaming red. Or was he the one screaming? All he could hear was ringing in his ears.
Elliott pulled his gun free of its holster and set it within reach, then he fumbled for his radio, dropping it four times. He took off his gloves to get better purchase, but the freezing wind stiffened his hands like wet wash hung outside in the winter cold.
Good news was, the pain had stopped. His leg was numb. Totally numb. And the wolf wasn’t growling. No. No more growling at all.
He stilled as little white pinpricks of light danced around the edges of his vision, then the pain washed back over him like a riptide trying to carry him off to someplace deep and dark. A small bone-carved pendant weaved before his face--a leather-bound pendant wrapped around a thick neck of fur. He reached out for that lifeline.
There was a sudden warmth. And then he let go and drifted into oblivion.
